What are the best beaches for kids that are close to Waikiki?
Duke’s Lagoon (West Waikiki Beach) is a nice calm lagoon with SUP and water bike rentals.
East Waikiki Beach has walls in the ocean blocking large waves.
Also Kaimana Beach in Waikiki (Kapiolani Park side). In general, it’s less people and clean/clear water, dogs friendly and lifeguard on duty too.

So if we’re now talking about kid friendly beaches not in Waikiki, then you’d have to throw in Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach (25 min drive) and Hanauma Bay (25-30 minute drive).
Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach are absolutely beautiful and have almost no waves. Sometimes it gets quite windy, however, so bring something to cover with. FYI- Kailua Beach has a life guard but Lanikai Beach does not.
If you’re headed to Kailua from Waikiki and have a car, you can stop by Safeway on Kapahulu Avenue or Whole Foods in Kailua for beach food. You can also find nice sit-downs in Kailua as well.
Hanauma Bay is great for snorkelling and also has life guard. Right before you get there on your left you’ll find Hawaii Kai which has fun places to stop and eat, including a Leonard’s Bakery truck.
